HELIOTROPE showcased SSbD innovations at the 1st SENTIATECH Congress

The HELIOTROPE project was recently featured at the 1st SENTIATECH Congress: Detection, Measurement and Control of Emerging Risks, a European forum positioned to become one of the most relevant events in the development of robust solutions for the early detection, monitoring and control of emerging chemical substances, pathogens and contaminants. The congress serves as an essential meeting point to accelerate international collaboration, foster strategic networking, generate R&D&I synergies and promote knowledge transfer across the scientific, industrial and regulatory ecosystem.

Within this context, our partner Tekniker presented key work from Work Package 5, which works on integrating safety and sustainability assessments from the earliest stages of HELIOTROPE’s materials development. Their contribution, titled “SSbD for High-T Thermal Storage in CSP Systems”, illustrated how the project applies the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) methodology to the development of advanced thermal energy storage materials for next-generation CSP plants.

The presentation emphasized on how HELIOTROPE incorporates safety, environmental and socio-economic criteria into decision-making processes for material formulation, alloy design and protective coatings. Among the insights shared were the identification of hazardous substances and critical raw material dependencies, and the evaluation of opportunities to minimise environmental impacts through better material choices and optimised processes. These results underline how SSbD can guide the development of cleaner, safer and more resilient energy technologies.

Below, readers will find Tekniker’s full abstract as published in the official SENTIATECH Book of Abstracts, along with the complete compilation of all conference abstracts, offering broader context on the scientific and technological discussions that took place.

The HELIOTROPE consortium warmly thanks Tekniker for representing the project and contributing to this important European dialogue on emerging risks and sustainable innovation. We look forward to continuing this momentum as HELIOTROPE advances towards delivering impactful, safe and sustainable solutions for next-generation energy systems.
