HELIOTROPE

Highly efficient and low-impact Innovative thermal storage system for enhanced dispatchability in concentrated solar tower plants

HELIOTROPE is an ambitious R&D project that aims to address the comprehensive development of novel molten salts and materials technologies for novel CSP thermal energy storage systems, enabling operation at temperatures surpassing the current 600ºC, SotA for CSP, and increasing plant dispatchability.

As a result, HELIOTROPE seeks to enhance the overall system efficiency through increased storage and receiver operation temperatures up to 850°C, key factor to increase exponentially the efficiency and dispatchability of the plant. Therefore, aligned with the SET Plan’s objectives and other EU initiatives, such as the REPowerEU initiative, the Fit for 55 legislations, as well as other pivotal European policies such as the European Green Deal, the Clean Energy for All Europeans package, the EU Renewable Energy Directive, and SSbD (Safe and Sustainable by Design) concept HELIOTROPE strengthens energy security, reduces reliance on fossil fuels, and promotes sustainable, competitive energy supply while lowering GHG emissions.

Innovative Molten Salts

Introduction of new, sustainable molten salts with enhanced physicochemical characteristics and optimal resistance properties for improved thermal storage efficiency in CSP plants.

Near-Zero Corrosion

Development of materials that ensure near-zero corrosion rates, contributing to longer operational lifespans and reduced maintenance needs.

Enhanced Temperature Capability

Capability to operate at temperatures up to 850ºC on the absorber surface of the receiver, significantly exceeding the current 600ºC limit for CSP systems.

Green deal

Green Deal, the Clean Energy for All Europeans package, the EU Renewable Energy Directive, and SSbD concept HELIOTROPE strengthens energy security, reduces reliance on fossil fuels, and promotes sustainable, competitive energy supply while lowering GHG emissions
